Sporty Flats Are Your Must-Have Spring Shoes

by Amber Herring

We can hardly believe it, but it's almost time to store those clunky waterproof boots that have gotten you through this Polar Vortex of a winter. So you know what that means -- time to start thinking now about your go-to spring shoes!

To our delight, sporty flats in all styles and colors will flood the stores this spring, summer and fall. Now don't get me wrong, I love a good heel (I am an accessories editor after all), but these flats are awesome because of the options: slip-on and low top sneakers, smoking flats, menswear-inspired oxfords and loafers. And many steal sportswear styles, like perforated leather, mesh, color blocking and stripes.

And did I mention the comfort level? No more lugging an extra pair of shoes for your commute.

But don't limit flats like these to casual attire. Many designers paired them with skirts and dresses on this season's catwalks. Check out our tennis-inspired fashion story to see our favorite ways to style these.

And proof that the trend has staying power? It continued into New York Fashion Week (I snapped a gorg red pony oxford style at Sigerson Morrison). Scared of an oxford? Try a smoking flat instead; it's basically an updated ballet slipper.

Happy spring shopping!
