The 4 Top Sunscreens to Get This Spring

By Elizabeth Angell, Allure magazine

You might think that knowing about a family history of skin cancer would make you wary of the sun. You'd be wrong. In a new study published in the journal BMC Public Health, researchers found that people who had a family history of melanoma (the most dangerous form of skin cancer) did not use an SPF when they sunbathed even though they knew that sunscreen could protect them against cancer and premature aging. What's more, the younger women in the study still thought of a tan as being healthy and were the most unlikely to use sunscreen.

Look, we're sympathetic: Unlike other known carcinogens (like cigarettes), you can't avoid the sun completely. And after this winter, we're looking forward to feeling some warm rays on our faces, too-while we're protected with sunscreen, that is. Here are the five newest, hottest sunscreens we'll be wearing this spring.

1. Own Active Block, SPF 30. This improvement on an old-school surfer's zinc stick comes in a little orange ball that's (1) adorable and (2) easy to find in an overstuffed beach bag or purse. And instead of giving you an all-white nose, it goes on clear and looks smooth under makeup. (It's out in March.)

2. Supergoop! SPF 30 Sunscreen Swipes. These paraben- and fragrance-free wipes are perfect for stashing in a purse or beach bag. We still recommend slathering yourself in SPF before you leave the house, but these are great for on-the-go touch ups.

3. Avon's Anew Solar Advanced Sunscreen. The line provides broad-spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays, along with anti-aging ingredients that help repair old damage by boosting the skin's ability to use antioxidants. It's out in May-and our editors say it feels great on your face.

4. La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Ultra Light Fluid Sunscreen SPF 50. We've long been fans of La Roche-Posay's Anthelios line. They offer incredible broad-spectrum protection and a high SPF-yet still feel light and non-greasy. This May, they're launching a mineral sunscreen with all the protective power of their usual chemical UV filters, so those with sensitive skin can now appreciate the line.

And if you do crave the look of a tan, may we suggest (for the umpteenth time) a self-tanner? St. Tropez Everyday Gradual Tan Mousse is an Allure Best of Beauty winner because it spreads easily, dries in ten second, and leaves no streaks. Best of all? It doesn't cause cancer!
