The Hunger Games Casts—Gasp—a Blonde!

By Sarah Wexler,Allure magazine

If you're one of the millions of fangirls obsessed with The Hunger Games trilogy, no doubt you know the books' heroine, Katniss Everdeen is described as a super-skinny teen with olive skin and black hair. So this week it surprised-and enraged-many fans when Jennifer Lawrence, the star of Winter's Bone, was cast as Everdeen in the film adaptation.

It wasn't Lawrence's age (20, and a very mature-seeming 20 at that), her skin color (white), or her body type (athletic) that took most of the heat-it was her hair color; it seemed readers can't imagine the the blonde with black hair. Director Gary Ross even had to publicly assure people that she'd get a dye job, or at least wear a wig, saying, "I promise all the avid fans of The Hunger Games that we can easily deal with Jennifer's hair color."

So, basically, the film scored a young star with outstanding acting chops-she received a Best Actress Oscar nomination last year-but instead of celebrating that, angry fans are wringing their hands over her not being a brunette. To me, it seems like a complete non-issue: stars get drastic dye jobs all the time. (Remember when Emma Stone's trademark red strands turned platinum overnight in preparation for the upcoming Spider-Man sequel?)

What do you all think of The Hunger Games' hair hype? Do you have that much trouble imagining Lawrence with dark hair?
