The Truth About Women and Lipstick

Few beauty items are as iconic, meaningful, and, well, controversial as lipstick. Whether or not you buy your favorite shade in bulk to ensure you never have a shortage-or prefer a bare lip-the relationship between women and lipstick is as storied as it is in flux (spring trend preview: bright lips will be everywhere).

Inspired by this (and the launch of their new Infallible Rouge line), the folks over at L'Oréal Paris conducted an online poll to better understand how women (and men) respond to the cosmetic staple. Here are some of their fun findings.

•Go ahead, reapply in public. 75% of women polled do not think it's a breach of etiquette to touch-up lipstick in public.

•Shade-switching has nothing to with men. Of the women polled, 90% said they wear lipstick to feel better about themselves-not to attract men, and 75% said they prefer to wear the shade that looks best on them, regardless of what their plans are.

•Embrace your inner-beauty junkie. Almost thirty percent of lipstick-wearers would trade a prized possession or daily habit (morning coffee!) to have their favorite shade on-hand at all times.

•Men really do love red lipstick. Nearly 70% of men polled think that red lipstick is sexy and a sign of success.
