Three Things We Loved Today: New York Fashion Week Day 7

New York Fashion Week marches on, and as Shine's senior fashion and beauty editor, I'm skipping over the impractical, so-called "trends" and presenting the three most inspirational things I see each day. Here are the best moments of Day 7:

1. "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at Badgley Mischka

Sometimes the inspiration for a collection is as lovely as the actual clothing. For spring, Mark Badgley and James Mischka were inspired by the 1935 film "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Models were primped to look as though they'd been lost in the forest, which meant undone, lightly crimped updos with flowers in them by Moroccanoil, goddess-like innocent makeup by MAC, and mauve nails by Deborah Lippmann. The organza, chiffon, and tulle gowns in pale shades like ivory, blush, and lilac were ethereal and fairy-like, and hologram tweeds were a delight on the eyes.

2. Around the world with Naeem Khan

This season the designer highlighted his recent travels, for example wave prints, courtesy of Hawaii. But his native India was ever-present in designs like this beaded red gown, my favorite piece of the day. I can definitely picture this one on celebrity with more alternative style, like Michelle Williams, come Oscar season.

3. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" at Betsey Johnson
Long-time friend and supporter Cyndi Lauper performed at Betsey Johnson's runway show, which also doubled as the designer's 70th birthday bash. Lauper dedicated her iconic women's anthem to Johnson, and every lady in the audience scream-sung the lyrics along with her for the entire song. The presentation included a retrospective of Betsey's fashions from the '60s through the present, along with her new dress collection. Johnson concluded the show with her signature cartwheel--and a split!--on the runway to 50 Cent's "In Da Club." Go shorty, it's your birthday.
