Vineyard Vines Burgee Club Pants: Fashion That Makes Us Sad

Preppy style evokes images of classic pearls, Lilly Pulitzer prints, polo shirts, and expensive sweaters draped casually around the shoulders. But Preppy has a darker side: Tiny whales, lobsters, or ducks embroidered in the unlikeliest of places, for example. And these pants.

These $125 Burgee Club pants, offered by purveyors of prep Vineyard Vines, make us sad.

Burgee is yacht-speak for the flags used to tell one pricey boat (or boating club) from another, and they come with a host of etiquette rules about how they can be flown, when, and by whom. The rules do not address whether the flags should ever be used as pants, but we're going to go with "No. Please, no."

The pants evoke the unfortunate late-1980s pinstriped Oxford shirts that were cobbled together from bits and pieces of other shirts. Like this. Though we suppose one could think of them as wonderfully efficient: Why wear one pair of chinos when you can wear six pairs at once?
