WD Reviews: Frizz-Fighting Hair Products

By Amanda Greene

Fall may be approaching, but summer's sticky humidity and sweltering temps aren't gone yet. And as long as the mercury isn't budging, frizzy, unmanageable hair isn't going anywhere either. From serums promising shine to creams boasting strand-smoothing properties, there are almost too many frizz-fighting potions to keep track of. WD editors tested some well-known brands to find out which products really work.

Check out all the different products WD editors have reviewed.

Keratin Complex Infusion

Overall Score: 5 out of 5
The promise: This replenishing cream claims to infuse hair with smoothing keratin proteins and emollients to revitalize it during blowouts and flat ironing.
What WD had to say: Though our tester's friend swore she'd love this smoothing cream, she was skeptical. But after testing the "super-easy, not sticky or greasy" product on her "wavy, kinky and frizzy" mane, she reported her blowout was "amazing" and she "didn't even need to use a flat iron" like she normally does. After spending the weekend at the beach without her hair frizzing up even once, she says she's officially "obsessed" with this product. Photo courtesy of KeratinComplex.com.

Blow Straight to the Point

Overall Score: 4.5 out of 5
The promise: This cream claims to relax and smooth hair for a sleeker blowout that lasts all day, as well as fight frizz and flyaways.
What WD had to say: Our tester's "fine and color-treated hair" is prone to dry, frizzy ends and oily roots. Many hydrating products prove to be too heavy for her thin strands, but this straightening emulsion "was light and left no residue behind." Not only did it "smooth and straighten" her locks during a blow-dry, but it also kept them completely frizz-free during a hot and humid subway commute, something that "never, ever happens." Avon Advance Techniques Frizz Control Lotus Shield

Overall Score: 4 out of 5
The promise: This leave-in treatment is said to form a humidity-resistant barrier on the hair's surface to control frizz, creating polished, controlled and sleek hair for up to three days.
What WD had to say: To tame her "thick, wavy, poufy and frizzy hair," our tester usually blow-dries straight the shorter layers around her face and then pulls it back once it's dry. After using Avon's treatment, she noticed her hair "didn't look as big since it wasn't as frizzy as it normally is." Though not all of the frizz was gone, her locks felt "softer and more controlled, without being weighed down." And, as the packaging indicated, the product was still effective even after our tester washed her hair. Photo courtesy of Avon.com.

Keratin Complex Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner

Overall Score: 4 out of 5
The promise: This natural keratin-based shampoo and conditioner claims to moisturize hair while protecting color, giving locks a smooth, soft and manageable appearance.
What WD had to say: Since our reviewer gets her hair highlighted every two months, she was attracted to this shampoo and conditioner's claims to smooth her "thin, fine, naturally wavy and color-treated locks." After using both products, her hair "seemed brighter and shinier; the texture was soft and it seemed to have more body." She also didn't have to spend as much time straightening as she normally does. Sally Hershberger Hyper Hydration Super Keratin Spray

Overall Score: 4 out of 5
The promise: This leave-in moisturizing spray promises to weightlessly tame frizz, static and flyaways with silk extract and super keratin.
What WD had to say: Our tester was interested in a product that would "diminish frizz but not weigh down" her thick, wavy and sometimes unruly hair. Since she never blows it dry, she liked that this product works to smooth strands without heat. Though she doesn't report "night-and-day results," she did like that the spray made her hair much smoother and reduced flyaways "especially around the part." Photo courtesy of Folica.com.

Kevin Murphy Straight Defence

Overall Score: 3 out of 5
The promise: This balm is designed to keep hair straighter for longer and improve hair strength while preventing static and flyaways.
What WD had to say: Our tester normally uses gel to blow out her "short, thick and wavy" hair. She found the Kevin Murphy balm to have an unpleasant scent. But after using the product, she found her hair was "straight and shiny" and stayed that way for the entire day. She also liked how much softer her hair was than when she uses gel. Keratin Complex Intense Rx

Overall Score: 3 out of 5
The promise: This serum promises to rebuild hair's elasticity, reduce breakage, repair chemically damaged hair and add shine.
What WD had to say: Our reviewer was excited to try this product because it contains the smoothing protein keratin, "the 'it' ingredient" her stylist always encourages her to try on her "curly, frizzy" locks. She loved how easy the serum was to use, and especially enjoyed its "clean and fresh" scent. The product seemed to cut down on the effort she invests in her usual straightening routine, and she reports her hair was "definitely shiny." Photo courtesy of KeratinComplex.com.
