This Week in Celebrity Fashion: Nights in Black Satin

When I get a little tired of seeing black on the red carpet, I think ahead to the upcoming award show season which will be loaded with the bizarre, boring and bold. That makes me appreciate black a little bit more.

Lately, Jessica's choices have been depressing and this take on a Sicilian widow is no exception. There's nothing wrong with the dress but it's definitely not a choice that someone who's celebrated for her body should be making. Same dress as a mini=sexy but in its current form, even with the seemingly sheer skirts, it's a snooze.

Kate's all about the waist and in this outfit, I can see why. Without the belt, it's a pretty enough dress but with it, the silhouette changes into something special.

Most of the time now, we see Sandy with baby Louis in leggings so it's great to see her in Hot Mama mode. While I'm not a fan of suits on the red carpet, I'm willing to make an exception. The exaggerated shoulders, the waist details and the nude lace cami all work (although I don't love the sheen of the fabric).

What a cute way to channel 1950′s glamour with a 2011 edge. While I normally can't stand the line of a dress broken up by an unnecessary skin show, I actually like the way Scarlett's dress seems both tame and slightly tarty.

How many times are we to be inflicted with this Stella McCartney disaster? Nicole and Gwyneth have worn variations on this tragic theme and now Charlize has fallen victim too. Why anyone would wear a dress that looks like you were rescued five years after a shipwreck is beyond me?

How to explain why the normally tasteful Helen Mirren is wearing something so tacky and off? The funny thing is that it has nothing to do with age - any 20 year old would have looked just as silly. My only hope was that she was trying to be funny while attending the British Comedy Awards but I'm not laughing. And somewhere, good taste is crying.

I have an innate revulsion to young girls in Hollywood dressing too mature for their age. It creeps me out and feels way too sexualized (see Chloe Moretz & Haile Steinfeld ). What I appreciate about Elle Fanning is that her dress is fashion-forward but still age appropriate (I'm choosing to overlook the heels, although I'm coveting them). If anything, this actually works because of her age, with its edgy sweetness.
