What Not to Buy at Payless

Payless made a name for itself by selling trendy shoes, boots, and accessories-at affordable prices. But it still can be a bit of an enigma. The store is in practically every mall and is always brimming with people. Still, browsing the aisles it can be hard to decide whether or not to actually buy anything-unless you have the following list. Here, we review what's worth buying and what should be left on the shelf during your next visit to Payless.

WHAT NOT TO BUY

Women's Boots

Generally speaking, it's wise to stay away from the boots at Payless-particularly knee-high boots. Payless boots tend to be made from PVC (aka plastic) and they aren't very well made. There are exceptions; some of the American Eagle and Airwalk boots aren't bad. Still, it's probably best to shop elsewhere for your fall and winter boot purchases-especially if you want them to last more than one season.

Beauty
When it's time to select your signature scent, stick to the department stores. The perfumes sold here smell less than opulent. Likewise bath and body products-you'll find better choices at Victoria's Secret or Bath & Body Works. Skip the makeup too.

Fall's Cutest Tops and Blouses Under $50

Belts
Much like the faux leather boots, the belts just look plastic and shiny-not a look we're after. It's worth the extra ten or fifteen dollars to get a more refined belt somewhere else at the mall.

Men's Dress Shoes
For the most part, the men's dress shoes are stiff and uncomfortable and rarely last more than one season.

Jewelry
Decorative baubles sold here are not particularly high-quality. Plus, you can get cuter stuff for the same price (or less!) at H&M or Forever 21.

WHAT TO BUY

Limited Edition Designer Collections
Following in the footsteps of Target and Gap, Payless is collaborating with several high-end designers to create affordable shoe collections. Currently, Lela Rose, Christian Siriano, Isabel Toledo, and Silvia Tcherassi have styles available-and we suggest you grab a pair or two of these exclusive-to-Payless heels and boots before they're sold out. We especially love the Lela Rose for Payless Lazer Cut pumps.

The Best Haircuts with Bangs

Slippers
Payless has a cute slipper collection with fun colors and cute designs. They are super comfy and never cost more than $23. For those prices, it might be worth grabbing two pairs!

Socks and Tights
In addition to shoes, Payless also has a huge selection of socks and tights. With socks available in almost every color and style, it's impossible to not find what you need-and they are priced appropriately. But the tights! For those who like to walk on the wild side, Payless carries a bunch of printed styles including cable knit, open weave, and floral designs. And for the very daring, they have leopard print too.
