What we loved in magazines this week (and a little of what we didn't)

The May lady magazines are out! At least some of them (which is a concept I've never understood-even when I worked in magazines-why, say, a May issue comes out in early April, rendering it old and obsolete by the month stamped on its cover. Is it like a mind trick, like you're supposed to think you're getting information early? Perplexing.). Anyway, yesterday I walked to the neighborhood dusty deli/decent newsstand, bought a stack of the new May magazines and read them cover to cover. After the jump, the fashion and beauty highlights you'll like this week, and a few things you probably won't at all.

Starting with Marie Claire, I love, love that they have Tina Fey on the cover and I think the interview by Amy Poehler inside is amusing and smart. But I don't understand the cover image. What do you guys think? It's supposed to be Hitchcock-esque, but I miss Fey's glasses, for one, and it's unclear to me why she's wearing a busy trench and disparate jewelry. The photos inside manage a much better job, however, where Fey looks comfortable and stylish in a winking, sexy, in-on-the-joke way.
Elsewhere in the magazine, there's MC's 101 ideas for fashion this month-many of which were really cute and under $100. I also liked the way they pulled off their hair guide, especially fun stories on the truth behind camera-ready hair and who's really a redhead (Lucille Ball, Debra Messing and Cynthia Nixon, no; Isla Fisher, Julianne Moore and Marcia Cross, yes).

Elle has Madonna this month, but even better than that, this is their annual Green issue and I thought it was really well-done, informative and comprehensive. From front to back, there's lots of information about new (and old) designers going green, tons of gorgeous eco-friendly clothes (some affordable, some very much not) and beauty products I actually want to buy not just stare at (paraben-free lotions, all-natural Nvey moisturizing foundations and chemical-free shampoos).
There's also an interview with Giorgio Armani (page 198) who would like to come back as in another life as Cary Grant, wishes he had David Beckham's body and thinks grunge was the worst trend of all time.

Oh, W. I want to understand you I really do. I mean, I know. This luxury/jewelry issue is not for me. It's for the lady who's in the market for $117,000 brooch with wings (page 94) or a purse that looks like I made it for my Girl Scout "crafts" badge in 1982 but actually costs $2,830 today (page 98). And I guess that recession-proof lady also wants a $299,000 trunk (106), a $920 denim bathing suit (98), $13,400 canvas boots (114) and sunscreen that costs $130 (page 128).
And maybe that lady is also interested to know how much fun Cameron Diaz thinks Ashton Kutcher is and how Ashton thinks Cameron can't sing and how Cameron says, "I'm in love with love. I'm in love with life?"
