Would You Visit Blond Island?

By Elizabeth Angell, Allure magazine

How many blondes does it take to run a resort? This isn't the set up to a joke--it's an actual question that a Lithuanian company called Olialia has asked itself. Olialia (pronounced "Oohh la la") is developing a resort in the Maldives that would be staffed entirely by blonds. Even the flights that would take tourists to the island in the Indian Ocean would be crewed by fair-haired pilots and flight attendants. (This may not be legally blond, however: Local laws apparently require resorts to hire 50 percent of their staff locally, and while Lithuania may be almost 80 percent blonde, the indigenous population of the Maldives is decidedly not.)

Olialia apparently has some experience with this approach. According to the BBC, the company is "run and staffed by blonde women, and already operates in 75 different business sectors, making products from computer software and food products to pop music." When asked whether her company discriminated against non-blondes, managing director Giedre Pukiene said Olialia welcomes all applicants, no matter their ethnicity or hair color. "But we find that when women with dark hair work here, they are surrounded by all these beautiful blondes, so eventually they end up going blonde too," she added.

The idea that blonds are inherently more attractive simply because of their hair color is just wrong. (Not to mention that anyone with a salon appointment or a box of haircolor could fit the bill in a matter of hours.) But please--this idea is so gimmicky and ridiculous, it could only be thought of by.... someone who knows how to get the attention of the blogosphere. Maybe blondes really are more crafty.
