Would You Wear Maternity Spanx?

By Tracey Lomrantz, Glamour magazine

You swear by your Spanx for weddings, hot dates, heck even the beach...but would you wear 'em when your expecting?

The recent launch of Assets Marvelous Mama at Target--a lower-priced line of maternity shapewear, the little sister to "Mama Spanx," which have been around since 2004--is causing quite a stir in the blogosphere. The ladies at Jezebel took offense with the product, saying, "Spanx-the company that has made a mint selling body-slimming garments-is now targeting pregnant women with its Mama Spanx maternity line. Because you're never allowed to have a gut that big, even if there is a fetus in it." But over at TODAYShow.com, they dug a bit deeper into the situation and discovered that the range of products has no compression fabric in the belly area, only around the hips, butt, and thighs, and that plenty of pregnant women swear by their Spanx. They had an editor try out the Power Mama Spanx to surprisingly pleasant results, and company founder Sarah Blakely told the website, "We get tons of e-mails from pregnant women thanking us for the under-belly and low-back support provided in our maternity line."

I've never been pregnant myself, so I can't say how I'd feel about being all sucked in while carrying a child, but I do know that I can barely stand 10 seconds in regular Spanx, so I'm guessing they'd feel pretty constricting with an already-swollen body. Then again, some of the commenters at Jezebel swear they wear them for purposes of support, not slimming.

I'm so curious to hear what you gals have to say about this topic! Have any of you ever worn maternity Spanx? Do you think you would if you became pregnant? Are you all for a little confidence-booster when a woman is expecting, or do you think these send the wrong message to mothers-to-be? Discuss!
