Jennifer Lawrence's Dior Oscar Dress: Now You Can Wear It To Prom

If you want to wear Jennifer Lawrence's Christian Dior Oscar gown, you have two options: You can spend around 5-figures and live off a Ramen diet. Or, you can head over to Sears for the $129 knock-off. Tough choice.

Department store Sears is selling a Jump Apparel prom dress directly inspired by the pale pink Dior Haute Couture gown Lawrence wore to the 2013 Oscar Academy Awards for $129 on sale from $218.00 (see a black version here).

“This strapless, ivory gown is adorned with a glitter print that mimics the crinkled effect of Jennifer’s dress, as well as a full skirt,” a Sears spokeswoman told Forbes.

The prom dress is just one example of a red carpet frock finding second life in chains such as Sears and Forever 21. Linda Chang, marketing director of the fashion-forward chain Forever 21 (whose retail concept is in part based on selling runway looks at budget prices) credits social media with quickly informing businesses on what consumers are gravitating toward. “Immediate access to what people are ‘liking’ and responding to in real-time through new social media platforms shaves weeks off of our process and it allows us to adapt to the latest trends and provide our customers with what they want even more quickly,” said Chang who also pointed to "strapless gowns and halter-tops as two “overriding trends” that will be picked up by the big national chains."

Lubov Azria, co-creative director and head designer of BCBG MAX AZRIA GROUP also chimed in saying, “Because the Oscars set the bar for all red carpet fashion, mass audiences look to the red carpet for inspiration."

“This season, pink was the most influential color on the carpet. Blush, corals, creams and reds dominated the scene with their feminine flushed hues draped on starlets in strapless and classic silhouettes …[These hues] will be reinterpreted by the mass.”

Lawrence's gown doesn't speak to you? “We will see small details taken from [other] gowns and interpreted into more wearable pieces," says Chang.

Next celebs on the docket are Charlize Theron and (like her or not) Anne Hathaway. “The peplum waist detail from Charlize Theron's [Dior] gown will be illustrated in ready- to-wear pieces through dresses and top silhouettes. Also, the [Valentino high apron-style front with the dramatic bare back, as seen on Anne Hathaway, may be interpreted through tops and dresses," says Chang.

Forever 21 also plans to use Halle Berry’s floor-length, long-sleeved Versace gown as inspiration for items in its fall fashion line. “We loved Halle Berry’s bold, black gown with placed metallic, deco beading,” says Chang. “These colors, shapes and layouts will work on a variety of key silhouettes for fall.”

So go ahead and dress up like your favorite celeb. Money and fame not included.
