A Green Diva Earth Day Experience

by Green Diva Meg

You would think that being a Green Diva would mean that I celebrated Earth Day every day. I don't know whether I celebrate daily, but I do try. The truth is when you've been living this lifestyle for as long as I have, this annual Earth Day frenzy can get a little silly. I don't mean to be all bah humbug on the Earth Day thing.

It is actually rather exciting to see more and more people getting involved in the festivities - especially the kids. They are really the important ones who will likely have the opportunity to take this crazy ball and run with it after we've finished doing our best.

People always ask me about what I am doing for Earth Day with such great anticipation for all the events and activities I must participate in. This will be the first year I'm getting involved in some very public fun as a participant in the awesome Earth Day Experience, which will take place here in Morristown on the very day (Sunday, 4.22).

I usually try to do more private activities that honor momma earth. Here are a few things I've done and suggest considering doing for your own Earth Day experience:

  • Get reacquainted with nature - take your shoes off in a field. Lie in the grass. Go into the woods and touch (hugging is allowed) a tree and a rock. Listen to nature. Get connected.
  • With the kids - again, play outside! Take a hike and talk about what you see and hear. Visit a local farm and talk about where food REALLY comes from. Play a family game together (We will be playing a fun new board game called GBO Hawaii that is all about creating sustainable business and community).
  • Don't be a consumer - I do my best not to shop for anything on Earth Day (except maybe food). Unless you are at an awesome Earth Day event with some must-have eco-friendly products, try not to indulge in our addiction to stuff - just for one day. You'd be amazed if you really stop and think about all the silly stuff we buy that we really DON'T need and all the packaging and carbon that goes into it all!
  • Potluck fun - get together with friends and family and create a wonderful meal. Of course, try to buy locally produced, organic, etc. Nothing like nourishing yourself with friends and delicious food. It's a great way to share recipes, stories and ideas related to keeping Earth Day a daily event in our consciousness and our communities.
