Happy Earth Day

Did you know that April 22nd was Earth Day? Did you remember to buy her a present? I hope it wasn't one of those cheesy, musical greeting cards that belts out Carole King's "I Feel the Earth Move" - Mother Earth is more of a smooth jazz kinda lady…

Earth Day started in 1970, as a way of raising public awareness about air and water pollution. Gaylord Nelson, founder of the Earth Day movement, felt compelled to take action after seeing the devastating effects of the 1969 Santa Barbara (CA) oil spill (EarthDay.org). Over the years, the movement has grown to the global initiative that it is today.

So how will you celebrate Earth Day? Plant a tree? Recycle your trash? Walk instead of drive? If you're looking for inspiration, you can visit EarthDay.org for ideas on ways to take action and even sign the Act of Green Pledge.

As for me, my Act of Green pledge is to reduce the number of plastic water bottles I use. I've been trying to up my water intake, but have gotten into the habit of just buying water by the case. It's quick and convenient, but a reusable bottle with a filter really doesn't take that much more time to fill.

So what are you waiting for? Get out there and celebrate the day! Step outside barefoot and feel the grass between your toes while the sun warms your spirit (unless it's raining where you are… you might look silly and you'll track in mud). Feel free to share what you're doing to go green, I'd love to hear!
