Not all eyes and iPhones are on the models during a fashion show. In fact, celebrities in the front row may get even more scrutiny: Pre- and post-show, they are mobbed by paparazzi, TV crews, and well-dressed selfie-seekers. So, of course, they want to look fabulous. To find out how the stars picked their hairstyles during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, we approached them backstage and from our strategic second row perch and asked: What were you thinking?

Katie Holmes (at Donna Karan): "This dress was a little more formal, so I thought the hair should be a little more downtown."

Tyra Banks (at Marchesa): "I did a photo shoot, and I pulled the tear sheet, and I showed the hairdresser. And I said, 'You did it for the photo shoot. Do it for Marchesa.'"

Mary J. Blige (at Dennis Basso): "Special fashion hair? Yes. I toned it down, didn't make it so big, because the fur I'm wearing is doing a lot."

Anna Kendrick (at J. Mendel): "[I wanted] whatever wouldn't get completely destroyed by the snow, so I pulled it back and tight."

Freida Pinto (at Michael Kors): "I usually go with the neckline of the dress. On this one, the neckline is really high, so I picked the hair up."

Carrie Underwood (at Peter Som): "I really feel like if I dress springy and I think spring, it's going to come faster. So I just wanted something that was easy and messy."

Kelly Rowland (at KaufmanFranco): "My new bob? Five days ago I kept saying, 'Please cut more, and more.' I needed a change. Something edgy, totally different."

Colbie Caillat (at Red Dress): "I wanted it to be big hair. It's going to be bigger--right before I go out, we'll poof it up."

Natasha Lyonne (at Christian Siriano): "Is this my fashion hair? Interesting. When I say 'interesting,' I mean, 'not that interesting.'"

Emmy Rossum (at Monique Lhuillier): "This was like, got off the plane and I haven't washed it since. It's actually tied in knots--it's called a shoe lace braid."

Coco Rocha (at Herve Leger): "I was kind of having a bad hair day. I was like, 'Put a hat on it.' That was it, it was having a panic attack this morning."
