Do You Give Out Candy On Halloween?

I've never been a Halloween person, but my two-year-old daughter is so into it. This is the first year I've actually made plans and purchased costumes, but I am still hung up on one thing: the candy.

Now I'm not a big health nut, but on a day-to-day basis, there isn't much candy consumption in my house. I don't usually eat it and I make an effort not to let my daughter eat it. Don't get me wrong, she's had candy before, but I want to ensure her teeth are healthy so I keep it away as much as possible.

Enter October 31 and my daughter's newfound love for all things Halloween. All she knows is that you get dressed up on Halloween, so we're putting on our costumes and going to a friend's birthday party in the afternoon. The jury is still out as to whether or not we're going trick or treating. There's just no way I am letting my daughter eat all that candy.

Of course, the flip side to that is, if we stay home and do some sort of Halloween craft, do I give candy to the trick or treaters that stop by? I don't want my child eating it, so wouldn't it be hypocritical of me to hand it off to someone else's kid? But would I be taking all the fun out of Halloween by giving the kids apples and toothbrushes instead?

So what do I do? Take my little girl trick or treating, then only allow her to eat one piece of candy? Or stay home and be the Scourge in apartment 10 handing out granola bars?

Let me know your thoughts on Halloween candy in the comments.

And if you're like me and staying away from the Halloween candy, here are some other alternatives I'm considering:

All kids love LEGOs, so maybe I'll stock up on the minifigs and give those out...

Another thing kids love? Silly bandz. Silly bandz are a pretty good non-tooth decaying treat, right?

What about temporary tattoos? Then the kids can pick their favorite characters...
