How Much Is Too Much To Spend On a Kid's Halloween Costume?

I am not at all a Halloween person. I wasn't really allowed to dress up as a child and for the last two years haven't dressed my daughter up for Halloween either.

Well, she's two now and definitely more aware of her surroundings. She gets all the Halloween talk and constantly talks about costumes. I made the mistake of asking her one day if she wanted to be a pumpkin or a cupcake for Halloween and she enthusiastically responded, "A cupcake!" Ever since then, she's been fixated on being a cupcake.

Back in September there was a cute, cheap cupcake costume at OldNavy.com, but it sold out within a week and of course I didn't buy one. For the last two and a half weeks I have been looking for cupcake costumes to no avail. So finally, I just bought the Old Navy cupcake costume... on eBay. For $50.

The costume was probably $25 at most when it was on OldNavy.com, so basically I paid double for a costume she'll only wear once and for a holiday I'm not even psyched about. It was an impulse buy that I totally regret now.

But what do you think? Is $50 too much to spend on a Halloween costume for a two-year-old? I am not crafty, so there's no way I could have made her one. And I checked out Pottery Barn Kids and their costumes are like $59, so maybe $50 is actually okay. Let me know your thoughts on what's an acceptable amount to spend on kids' Halloween costumes in the comments.
