3 Morning Mood Boosters

By Sarah Jio, Glamour magazine

Grumpy in the morning hours? It's easy to be this month, especially if it's dark and cold where you are, and now that the holidays are over (letdown!). Three easy ways to perk up before heading to work...

I found some great tips from WomansDay.com recently about things women can do in the morning to start your day on a happy note:

1. Step outside: I know, it's cold! Brrrr. But, if you can squeeze in a walk, bike ride, or run--even just 5 or 10 minutes outside--you'll be surprised at how a little fresh, outdoor air can boost your spirits. In fact, past research indicates that just 5 minutes of outdoor exercise can improve you happiness in major ways. Try it (even if it means doing a few jumping jacks on the balcony of your apartment!).

2. Reset your mood with deep breaths: Robyn McKay, PhD, a psychologist based in Tempe, Arizona, says that the simple act of taking five deep breaths and reminding yourself that you want to feel good--now--can help reset your mood to a good one.

3. Drink hot chocolate: I know, sugary--but maybe you can whip up a batch of homemade low-sugar cocoa (just whisk together non-fat milk, a bit of cocoa powder and sprinkling of your favorite sweetener in a pan on the stove ... voila!). Not only is it a yummy treat, but researchers say that drinking cocoa has mood-boosting properties (so much so that I'm craving a cup right now!).
