3 Spalike Beauty Boosters to Try on a Snowy Winter's Day (/Evening)

It's four degrees here in suburban New Jersey this morning (wth?), and with my husband away on a "business trip" at a spa resort in 80-degree Arizona ("hope I don't get stuck here because of the snow!" yeah right), all I can think about is how I wish someone would come give me a warm stone massage. So here's what I plan to do to boost my beauty spirits instead.

1. Light a candle in the shower. It's a tactic I've mentioned here before, but one that still totally does the trick for me. Dim the lights, spark up a flame, and a shower becomes a truly soul-soothing and spa-like experience. (Just be sure to use a lot of lotion promptly afterward, as we know how long hot showers parch the skin!)

(Aside: I prefer a candle-lit shower to a bath--baths just feel like such a production, with the filling and water-temperature-adjusting and slow-leaking drains and towel-roll pillows that get soaked.)

2. Give your feet a bath. Remember that foot bath you bought on impulse at Bed Bath & Beyond or got from your mom for Christmas six years ago? Here's the perfect time to actually use the thing. Fill it with warm water before you watch TV tonight and turn on the fun massagey feature. Then give your soles a nice pumice/filing, since I know you've been slacking on that this winter. If you're really motivated, paint on some pretty toenail polish for an instant pick-me-up.

3. Make a brown-sugar body scrub. While your skin might be a bit dry and itchy when it's cold out and the heat's on, you don't want to exfoliate it too harshly, or you'll just strip all your natural oils and make matters worse. A gentle brown-sugar scrub is the perfect way to slough off the dull stuff, and it's as cozy as fresh-baked cookies on a snowy day.

Here's how: Mix two cups brown sugar and one cup white granulated sugar, then add a cup of almond oil and a tablespoon of vanilla extract and/or honey. Store in a sealable glass jar.
