7 Nutrition Tips to Transition Skin from Winter to Spring

Spring is on the way, beauties! In order to get our skin in tip-top shape for the new season, we looked to Cosmetic Dermal Therapist, Amy Chalmers, for tips on how to make the transition from the inside, out. "The best way to get that healthy glowing skin is to ensure adequate nutritional intake to the cells and systems that make up your body's natural moisturizing factors," says Chalmers. What exactly does she mean, you ask?

1. EFA's omega-3s and -6s work to build up your acid mantle, one of the top three layers of the skin's defense system. Kiwi, flax, salmon, and walnuts are great sources!

2. Antioxidants prevent lipid peroxidation, which breaks down the membrane of cells and prevents them from doing their work. Vitamins A, B3, C, and E are powerful antioxidants and can be found in berries and beans.

3. Amino acids and minerals feed keratinocyte, which helps your natural moisturizing factors keep water locked in to preserve the softness and smoothness of your skin. Active Calcium is a great source.

4. Water needs to be consumed throughout the day to have an accumulative effect. It is recommended to drink two liters a day-but remember, things like coconut water, kambucha, green tea, and lemon water work too.

5. Greens are full of an assortment of essential nutrients to optimize cell function and keep your skin looking its best. Make your own green drink and be sure to include the following boosters: green powder, chlorella, seaweed, bok choy, spinach, or kale.

6. Vitamin D supplements are a great way to get the proper doses recommended without having to put your skin in the harmful rays of the sun.

7. Hyaluronic Acid is a powerful antioxidant that is best known for its plumping effects on the skin. It has the ability to bond water to the tissues and help drive collagen production. To ensure the maintenance of healthy levels of Hyaluronic Acid in your skin, try magnesium, zinc, and phytoestrogen supplements.
