7 Ways to Find Your Ideal Weight

It's not all about watching the scale...
It's not all about watching the scale...

We love the attitudes that Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera have had about their weight lately. They've basically said, "this is what I look like, and if you don't like it, too bad." Sure, we all want to look crazy-toned, but it's not natural for everyone. That's why we consulted the experts on how to find your ideal weight-and keep it. Keep this on the back burner when you're trying to firm up.

1. So, What's Your Ideal Weight Again?

This is basically the weight where you're the healthiest. You look and feel great, and everything in your bod is working the way it should.

2. Why It's So Important
So many things are affected by this. When you're at your ideal weight, your skin is clear, you have loads of energy, and it's fairly easy to maintain that weight. Plus, it's nice to not stress about trying to fit into a size four dress when you know you're healthiest when you fit into a six.

3. Do Some Math...
Everyone's ideal weight is different, but it's usually determined by your body mass index (BMI), which is calculated based on your height, weight, and gender. For most people, a BMI of 25 or more is considered overweight, and a BMI of less than 18.5 is considered underweight, so you want to aim to be in the 18.5 to 24 range. This BMI calculator will help figure out where you fall.

4. ...But Leave a Little Wiggle Room
Unfortunately, BMI calculators don't take in the whole picture. You could be muscular and have a high BMI, for example, but, if you're trying to figure out your ideal weight without a doc, you have to be honest with yourself. If you haven't been to the gym in ages and have a high-ish BMI, then you're probably not at your ideal weight.

5. Don't Be a Slave to the Scale
It's totally normal for a person to fluctuate a few pounds from day to day, especially if you had a salty meal the night before. It's okay to weigh yourself here and there but don't make it a regular habit.

6. Use the Jeans Test
If you're eating well, exercising regularly, and keeping stress to a minimum, you should be able to be in the right range. But if you notice your jeans are suddenly a bit tight and you haven't been able to work out as much, go ahead and weigh yourself to see where you're at.

7. Keep It Up
Another reason why ideal weight is so freaking great: You can treat yourself here and there and won't totally fall off the wagon. Just balance sweets and snacks out with a healthy mix of veggies and fruit, whole grains, lean proteins (like Greek yogurt), and healthy fats. Your bod will thank you.
