Are Stars What They Proclaim to Eat?

By Kate Sullivan, Allure magazine

This week, the New York Timesexamined the phenomenon of actresses chowing down in front of magazine interviewers, and asked if the basket of fried calamari is too obviously part of a show-both the actress branding herself as a sexy, no-holds-barred kind of gal and a preemptive strike against accusations that she earned her slim figure with some disordered, un-American eating. Well, duh. But that doesn't necessarily mean the "show" is fictional.

Some people want you to believe a certain thing about them because it's true-gasp! Yes, for every salad with dressing on the side, messenger-delivered diet meal, or juice cleanse description in celeb stories (we've had 'em!) there seems to be 20 descriptions of overflowing pasta bowls or mega-fatty burgers and a plate stacked high with fries. But it might be that those foods simply sound better described. (I eat oatmeal with raisins every morning, but I don't talk about it the way-or as much-as I talk about my Friday night pizza dates.)

Food is also a common touchstone because people really like food; most Americans have it at least three times a day. We watch competitive cooking shows, read Zagat and menupages, and post on Facebook every time we eat a halfway decent sandwich. So it doesn't seem like far of a stretch that stars would not only consume a lunch with a journalist but that they'd also talk about food a whole lot-especially if they don't want to talk about their personal relationships! In this way, the stars really are just like us. They, too, Tweet about diet-breaking McDonald's visits (Katy Perry) and send out e-newsletters about vegan cupcakes. (Actually, maybe only Gwyneth Paltrow does the latter.)

Of course, just because food pornography is the great equalizer doesn't make it interesting-whether it involves celebs or not. I could certainly stand to see fewer cake slices in friend's vacation photos. (Really? That's what you saw in Italy?) So, what do you think about the meal descriptions in celebrity profiles? Is it time for this trend to die? Or do you think a star's food choice actually says anything about her?
