Are the Obamas on the Cheater's Diet?

We always appreciate Maureen Dowd's perspective, but we've got to admit she does get a tad nitpicky here and there. Right now, she's uber-concerned about the Obamas sending mixed messages when it comes to diet. In an exhaustive account of the First Family's history of preaching how important it is to eat healthily alongside their habit of posing for the cameras at various burger joints across the nation, she chides, "Mr. Obama ostentatiously treats himself to fries and burgers to beef up his average-Joe image (even though he's anything but)."

If it's not their diet, it's their appearance. Michelle Obama's makeup artist controversy.

We say, that's exactly WHY it's a brilliant strategy: The Obamas really do go out of their way to underscore the importance and value of good nutrition, and if it really is important to them (and it should be, given the obesity epidemic in this country), they're not going to do themselves any favors coming across as die-hard dieters. It's more than obvious that Americans are never going to ascribe to a purely grilled fish and greens lifestyle, but if we can learn to improve our balance between the latter with fast food, we'd all be a lot better off. And that brings us to another point: As opposed to the stringent diets people tend to follow for a day or two, eating organic salads with the occasional foray into hot-dog-and-ice-cream territory is the habit of many a healthy, average-to-thin person we know, not to mention the basis of our Cheater's Diet, (sign up here). We're just thrilled the president's promoting it.
