Barefoot Running: Is This a Trend Worth Trying?

By Sarah Jio, Glamour magazine

Gals, what do you think of barefoot running? Lots of people are talking about it, and I was shocked to see a couple out together running barefoot on the streets of Seattle last weekend, right near a couple of broken bottles. Experts say it's loaded with health benefits, but would you try it?

Shape
reported on the barefoot running trend recently. We've talked about it here before, but things are heating up in the barefoot running world, with shoe companies like Nike debuting almost-barefoot "shoes" (the new New Balance 101s are available in October).

The bestselling book Born to Run by Christopher McDougall really got people talking about barefoot running, and the a study by University of Virginia Center for Endurance Sport reporting that barefoot running may reduce running-related injuries and pain because it trains your feet to run the "right way" (landing on the balls of your feet rather than on your heels).

My honest take? I wouldn't attempt this without some sort of protective covering on my feet to protect against rocks, glass, and other gross things (needles, worms, parasites--use your imagination), but I am intrigued enough to try it. Will do and report back!

Have you ever tried barefoot running? Or is this a trend that's just not for you?
