While we've heard it all over here, from green-juice-as-breakfast to carbo-load breakfast to fruit cup breakfast, the jury's still out whether a big breakfast actually helps or hurts your weight loss journey.

ABC News reports that a new study in this week's Journal of Obesity examined the question and came up - huzzah! - in favor of breakfast. Tel Aviv-based researchers split their test group of 1,600 middle-aged overweight women in half, asking one side to consume most of their daily calories at breakfast and the other side at dinner.

The heavy breakfast eaters lost an average of 20 pounds over the course of three months while the lighter breakfast eaters lost only eight. However, American studies remain undecided and often in conflict with each other. A Cornell study found that skipping breakfast, while study participants reported feeling hungrier throughout the day, avoided an extra 408 calories. Ultimately, the general consensus seems to be that the correlation between morning meal and weight loss has more to do with what kind of breakfast you're eating, and in what sort of portions - alas, none of these studies looked at the best option for a big-breakfast weight loss meal.

So have a croissant, keep calm and carry on.
