The use of a contraceptive is almost inevitable. It is, therefore, important to choose the most suitable method. The birth control ring is one such birth control method, whereby a 2 inches wide, flexible ring is inserted into the vagina. Although safe, this method does have some drawbacks. When inserted, this ring releases specific hormones, which lead to certain bodily changes making it impossible for a sperm to fertilize an egg. The ring is not to be used for more than three consecutive weeks, after which it should be discarded.

Although this method has its risks; the benefits outweigh them by a large scale, making it a suitable choice for many women. For women avoiding pregnancies, it is much easier to have a ring inserted once every month, instead of taking a pill every day. The birth control ring, furthermore, exposes women to lower levels of hormones compared to other alternatives. This method also helps women avoid certain medical complications such as ectopic pregnancy, cancer and osteoporosis, to name a few. Women also report of shorter and painless experiences after using this method. Besides, regular use also helps one get rid of acne.

A major disadvantage of the ring is that it plays no role in keeping one safe from sexually transmitted diseases. Furthermore, the ring falling out of its place is also a common complain.

As with any contraceptive, this birth control measure is also known to cause some side effects. They are, however, not to be considered as threatening and disappear after a month or two. These side effects include irritation and infection in the vaginal area, vomiting sensation and lightheadedness, tenderness in the breast region, swelling of the abdomen and weight gain, sudden changes in mood and varying menstrual cycle, and lastly, vision problems.

Being a hormonal contraceptive, consisting of estrogen and progestin, the ring poses some rare, although harmful, side effects. These are clotting of blood in the vessels, heart diseases, high blood pressure, breast and liver cancer, and lastly, women suffering from abnormal fat metabolism are at a risk of developing pancreatitis.

Furthermore, pregnant women or those currently breastfeeding, as well as women who have spotting between periods are also advised against using this method.
