How to Boost Your Mood with Scent (and a Little Sensibility)

You guys, we totally understand when you're feeling blue because of the seemingly endless bad weather or a bit beat without that second Red Eye from Starbucks. And while a coffee run or some warmer weather could help things, you can also boost your mood with a few fragrance choices -- no matter what you need to get into the mood for. We tapped Sue Phillips, fragrance expert and founder of Scenterprises, for the 411 on what scents will help you feel better, faster.

Invigorate Me: If you want to stimulate your senses first thing (and let's be real, in this busy world, who doesn't), Phillips suggests reaching for products laced with peppermint and eucalyptus: the latter has been proven to increase alertness, while peppermint promotes concentration and stimulates clear thinking. Get a little bit of both from Molton Brown Eucalyptus Body Wash, $30, which is perfect for an AM shower scrubbing.

Make Me Smile: That boy "broke" your heart? Don't let the bummer get the best of you, says Phillips, by picking scents that bring you back to your "cheery childhood memories, especially ones with vanilla and lively citrus notes," says Phillips. And what harkens back to childhood more than a scoop of ice cream -- or rather, a bath bomb that resembles one? We're way happier after sniffing Mixture Orange Vanilla, $8,the waffle cone-like tub treat that makes getting clean a truly enjoyable experience.

De-Stress Me: If you work better under stress, you can stop reading. But realistically, none of us do. And if you're like us -- with another deadline in 10 min, maybs? -- start smelling anything with notes of lavender or jasmine, says Phillips. 21 Drops Calm, $30, is a pint-sized rollerball of essential oil that'll make you forget whatever stressed you out in the first place. Roll the soothing scent on your temples, inside wrists, and sides of your neck. Get calm now, thank us later.

Make Me Sexy:
Didn't think a scent could bring on the heat? Think again, says Phillips. "There is nothing like a heady floral with a hint of sparkling green notes [to get you in a romantic mood]," she says. We recommend burning some candles to set the mood -- B. Witching Bath Co. Hydrangea Candle, $17, most definitely does the trick. TMI? Nah.
