8 Awesome Facts About Chelsea Clinton

Exciting! Will Chelsea Clinton be following in her parents' poltical footsteps?  The 34-year-old recently admitted that she wouldn’t rule out running for office, according to an interview with Fast Company. "I live in a city and a state and a country where I support my elected representatives,” Clinton, who resides in New York, told the magazine after being asked about her political future. “If at some point that weren't the case, and I didn't support my mayor or my city councilwoman or my congresswoman or either of my senators — and I'm lucky to live in a state where I have lots of women representing me, you know — maybe then I'd have to ask and answer the question for myself, and come to a different answer." Chelsea has hinted at a political run before, telling Buzzfeed in March, “I don’t know” when asked whether she would consider such a move. In light of ongoing speculation that her mother Hillary Clinton will also run for president in 2016, could a Clinton-Clinton ticket be in our future? Politcal ambitions aside, here are seven more reasons Chelsea Clinton rules.

She was prepped for success as a tot: Chelsea has been involved in politics ever since her father was the governor of Arkansas back in the 1970s. "One of my earliest childhood memories is being three years old and on the campaign trail with my dad," she told Fast Company. When a woman asked, "Do you want to grow up and be governor one day too?” Chelsea replied, “'No, I'm 3. I'm just waving the flag. That is my job right now.' Flag-waving extraordinaire." But that would soon change — the first thing Chelsea learned to read regularly was the newspaper and, by the age of 6, she was actively participating in “mock debates” with her parents, Bill and Hillary Clinton.

She’s felt lost in her career too: Many 20-somethings  bounce between jobs with no discernable career path, and Chelsea was no exception. In 2001, she pursued a degree in international relations at Oxford University and, after graduating, became a hedge fund associate in New York City and then dabbled in broadcast journalism by scoring a “special correspondent” gig at NBC. And as recently as 2012, when asked by Time Magazine what her five-year career plan was, Chelsea answered, “I don’t know.” The following year, she joined the family business as the vice chair of the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation. Chelsea explained her career wanderlust in the Fast Company interview: "It is frustrating, because who wants to grow up and follow their parents? I've tried really hard to care about things that were very different from my parents."

She was a vegetarian for 10 years: Despite her father’s notorious penchent for the Arkansas classic "bologna tralala"— slabs of fried processed meat topped with eggs and then fried — Chelsea has followed a strict diet for most of her life. "I was a vegetarian for 10 years and a pescatarian for eight. Then I woke up one day when I was 29 and craved red meat," she told Fast Company. "I'm a big believer in listening to my body's cravings." These cravings include fried chicken (husband Marc Mezvinsky’s favorite meal) which Chelsea admits is tempting, especially when he orders takeout from fast-food chain Popeye’s, but she abstains due to a gluten allergy. Willpower!

She values her private life: During the height of her father's 1992 presidential campaign, Chelsea, then 12 years old, was so shielded from the spotlight that many didn’t realize that the Clintons had a daughter, until the family posed for a pictorial in People magazine. Even as an adult, Chelsea has tried to maintain her privacy to the extent of famously refusing to speak to a 9-year-old Scholastic child reporter back in 2008.

She joined Facebook late: In a world where babies have Facebook pages, waiting until age 31 to join the  social network site seems downright ancient. But in September 2011, Chelsea opened a Facebook account and wrote as one of her first status updates, “I know I’m late, but I’ve finally joined Facebook!” She listed her interests as, “Spending time with my family and friends, reading, traveling, hiking, running, ballet, theater.” And, yes, her page is filled with adorable family photos.

She taught her parents how to text: During an interview at this year's annual South by Southwest festival, Chelsea described her childhood with Bill and Hillary, and admitted that, like many parents, hers were a bit technologically impaired. “I definitely taught my parents how to text and how to charge their phones,” Chelsea told Buzzfeed, adding that the latter task was “a very mysterious thing” for her parents. Her mom has mastered social media though — in 2013 Hillary Clinton joined Twitter and in June, the mother-daughter duo tweeted an adorable selfie.

She's fiercely loyal to her family: In 2008, during her mom Hillary's presidential campaign, Chelsea was giving a speech in Indiana when a bold audience member asked if her mother's credibility had suffered as a result of her father's 1998 affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Without skipping a beat, Chelsea shot back, "And I do not think that is any of your business" while the audience erupted in cheers.
