Cookie Diets are a Recipe for Weight Loss

By Brandi Koskie - Senior Editor for DietsInReview.com

For dieters, you can't get your hand caught in the cookie jar. It's like a ceramic trap lined with sugar-filled, fat-laden, calorie-brimming treats that will make everything from your wrist to your ankles a little wider.

The rules of "moderation" suggest that we can have a cookie sometimes. And we can. In moderation. That means a cookie once in a while, not a bag of Oreos while you watch DVRed reality shows. Michael Pollan, a popular food author, has been quoted saying that we can eat junk food as long as we make it ourselves. So to that, a homemade cookie, in which you control the ingredients, is going to be better than something from your grocery's bakery.

Still yet, if you don't have time to bake a batch, want to avoid the pre-fab dough, and still have a cookie craving that must be satisfied, then maybe a cookie diet is for you. There are three that are hot on the market right now. While each is unique unto themselves, the umbrella idea of each is that meals are replaced with their cookies, which provide nutrients, are filling and help you avoid cravings. Coupled with a healthy diet, weight loss is achieved.

Cookies are just one of the many food items in this medically supervised "cookie diet." The "no hunger" foods, like muffins, cookies, cupcakes and shakes, are 60-percent organic, use filtered water in baking, have no preservatives and are coupled with vitamin injections to help users lose up to 15 pounds in a month. The foods are made of natural ingredients and provide protein, fiber and amino acids. Dieters will consume a mere 800 calories per day.

A thorough physical examination is done when you start Smart for Life, and includes blood work, EKG, BMI and a thorough education of the program. Then, you visit a Smart for Life center weekly to monitor your weight loss, receive injections and pick-up food.

Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet

With claims to being the original cookie diet, Dr. Sanford Siegal has been baking up his weight loss cookies for more than 30 years via his private bakery in Miami, home to his medical clinic. Low-fat, high-fiber, high-protein cookies are specially created to suppress appetite, which helps you lose up to 15 pounds in a month.

Six of Siegal's cookies, in flavors like chocolate, oatmeal raisin, blueberry and banana, are eaten throughout each day. Then, a healthy meal made of lean protein and vegetables is prepared at the end of the day. Incredibly low in calories, about 800 per day, Siegal's plan also includes shakes and soups.

Hollywood Cookie Diet

This is the only one of the three cookie diets that doesn't have any medical supervision. But like its competitors, two meals and two mid-day snacks are replaced with these special cookies. Then, a lean meal is prepared for the end of the day. Each cookie is 150 calories, 4 grams of fiber, 8 grams of sugar, and contain a host of ingredients including soy, wheat, milk and eggs. The cookies are available in three flavors - chocolate chip, lemon, and oatmeal raisin - and all are available off the shelf at drug stores, discount stores and online. Like it's competitors, the diet is incredibly low in calories.

Hollywood Cookie Diet was featured on an episode of Lipstick Jungle, and stars like Mandy Moore and Jennifer Hudson have also been connected.

If short-term weight loss is what you're after, these meal-replacement cookie diets claim to help users lose up to 15 pounds in a month. However, users will typically resume a normal lifestyle and see that weight creep back on. If you're using it as a jumping off point for long-term weight loss, be sure to pay more attention to overall healthy eating habits and fitness than just replacing breakfast and lunch with a cookie.
