Do You Really Need Organic Tampons and Pads?

You buy your apples and strawberries organically (good girl!), but do you really need to fork down an extra couple bucks on organic tampons and pads? My take on the new trend ...

Corman, a Milan-based manufacturer of feminine hygiene products, has introduced Organyc its new line of feminine products made exclusively from 100 percent organic cotton available in the United States. The tampons, pads and liners are made from 100 percent organic cotton. They're chlorine-free, compostable and biodegradable. Conventional tampons and all pads are often made of a combination of plastic, cellulose, wood pulp and super-absorbent powders.

The products, now available at Target and Amazon, (check here for availability)range in price from $4.99-$5.99 per box--quite a bit pricier than other brands as the boxes only contain 10-14 tampons or pads.

The price is turnoff, yes, but here's why I think these could be a good idea: Experts have long warned that conventional cotton, as a crop, requires significant pesticide use. And when you think about inserting those pesticides into your vagina via a tampon (sorry for the visual), it's a little unsettling, especially when you try to avoid putting pesticides in your body via your mouth. BTW, your vagina is an absorbent organ! Some people insert medication this way and via needles because it's a quick entry point to the bloodstream. So, yes, I do see the value of using organic pads and tampons. And, I suspect that as more mainstream producers start offering organic choices, the prices will come down, too.

Something to think about, huh? Do you think organic when you buy pads and tampons?

P.S. More organic talk: I love this organic honey drink (something to try if you're sick of Vitamin Water!). Plus, can't afford to eat organically? Try this tip that may save you some pesticide exposure. And, print this list off and stick it on your fridge: The list of foods every gal should buy organic.
