Sure, there are plenty of studies out there that say doing [insert anything fun here] will kill you. But a new one caught our attention just because it was seemed so…random.

According to research from the University of Western Ontario, eating egg yolks is almost as bad for your heart as smoking. For the study, scientists surveyed more than 1,200 patients and found that those who ate egg yolks on a regular basis for years had about two-thirds of the same hardening of the arteries as those who smoked.

And hardened arteries put you at an increased risk for a stroke and heart attack later in life.

But don't run screaming from the omelette bar just yet. Cosmo Radio women's health expert Jennifer Wider, MD, points out that several studies have found that eating four or less egg yolks a week won't increase your risk for heart disease. The key is moderation.

Of course if you have a family history of high cholesterol or heart disease and you want to be cautious, limit your intake and opt for egg whites instead.
