You'd think that cold months like February might be when people would rather do anything but make the trek to the gym and work out. But according to research from Gold's Gym, October is what they call a "fitness pitfall"--the slowest gym month of the year based on membership check-in data across all of their gyms, nationwide.

It's not yet entirely clear why this is so--and, of course, it could be be that the not-too-hot, not-too-cold weather means more people are exercising outside than hitting the gym. Or maybe, now that we're starting to swap out sundresses for sweaters, it's a little easier to find an excuse not to work out. But still, a little motivation to get thee to the gym is never a bad thing, right? Here are a few ways to do it this month:

* Experiment with classes. Many gyms switch up their class schedules in the fall, adding all kinds of new classes--including things like hot spinning classes, where the temperature's cranked to 105 degrees (whoa!).

* Make dates.
Whenever you set up a time to meet someone at the gym--a friend or a fitness trainer--there's an automatic obligation to go, no matter how meh you're feeling about it. And, honestly, sometimes the hardest part is just getting to the gym--once you're there, you're going to work out.

* Use it as an excuse to shop.
Hey, you change up your regular wardrobe in the fall, right? There's something fabulous about ditching the workout clothes you've worn all summer long and sporting some brand-new gear to the gym.

* Find a way to go to the gym for free. You don't have to be a member to enjoy the gym. For example, every weekend in October, every Gold's Gym in the country is open for anyone to us--for free.

What are your get-to-the-gym tricks? How are your fall workouts different from the ones you do during the summer?
