Is a Feeding Tube the Latest Bridal Accessory?
We've all heard of brides going the extra mile to drop a few vanity pounds before squeezing into their gowns, but recent reports of a bride-to-be using a feeding tube days before her wedding seem a bit over the top for many.
The New York Daily News reports about the lengths some brides are now going to in order to look svelte on the big day. One Florida bride, Jessica Schnaider, was so eager to drop a few pounds that she paid $1,500 to have a feeding tube inserted through her nostril for ten days.
The feeding tube gives patients a protein-based formula with a small amount of calories and fat, but absolutely no carbs. The patient keeps a small bag with the formula attached to the tube in a purse by their side at all times. Rapid weight loss occurs when the body begins to go into starvation mode, known as ketosis, burning its own fat rather than sugar.
This type of extreme diet , known as enteral proteic nutrition, has been used in the past to treat patients who are morbidly obese. Many doctors will only perform the procedure on patients who must drop a significant amount of weight due to the fact that losing weight that quick can cause significant health problems, but Schnaider was able to find a doctor willing to work with her.
Though many feel that what Schnaider did was extreme and a health risk, she was very satisfied with the results from her feeding tube diet. She said she did not feel hungry and ended up losing her goal of 10 pounds in just eight days.
