Governor Wendy Davis? Texas Senator's Hinting at Gubernatorial Run

Sen. Wendy Davis, she of the insta-famous 11-hour filibuster, has spent a busy summer hopping from Washington D.C. back to Texas in efforts to fundraise and work with the Democratic pro-choice political group (and our pal) Emily's List. Now, the new feminist icon is considering a gubernatorial run.

By Anna Breslaw

"I can say with absolute certainty that I will run for one of two offices: either my State Senate seat or the governor," Davis says. Her final decision is expected to come in a few weeks, according to The New York Times.

A former House speaker confirms that she's added something new and exciting to left-wing Texas politics: "I think there's great enthusiasm, and she's probably created more enthusiasm than any Democrat in Texas has created in decades as far as interest from around the country."

Now that Gov. Rick Perry has announced that he's not seeking re-election (YAY!), Davis would be contending against Texas attorney general Rick Abbott, who's the frontrunner for the Republican ticket.

While Abbott's largely considered pretty tough to beat, Davis has already accomplished some huge feats in the Lone Star state - her work on behalf of women's rights, including the filibuster against Texas' stringent abortion legislation, has drawn more attention to oppressed Democrats in Texas, a minority group that hardly receives any press or credit for going against the GOP current.

We think Davis - a struggling single mom-turned Harvard grad-turned state senator - has more than enough pluck to go up again Abbott. Financially, Davis is a force to be reckoned with too: During her Washington trip at the end of June, she raised $930,000 in small contributions after the filibuster. If she ran, and won, think of all the Perry-instituted anti-choice crap she could tear down. It'd be magnificent.
