Halloween Candy: The Bad and the Better

by Lexi Petronis, Glamour

Are you excited for Halloween... candy? Now let's see if any of your favorites are on either of these lists.

No one dips into the candy bowl expecting to grab a healthy Halloween sweet--but some candies are worse (and better!) than others. The American Council on Exercise has just released its annual list of not-so-healthy Halloween candy so you can pick and choose (or trick and treat??) a little easier.

First, the bad news... here are the bad Halloween candies:

* Peanut butter cups: each cup has 105 calories, with 50 of them coming straight from fat.
* Kit Kat: three pieces will set you back 210 calories--that's a lot for a little bar.
* Mounds and Almond Joy bars: the coconut and almonds may seem healthy-ish, but the sugar and fat zero them out. A snack size bar of each is 80 calories, with 40 of those coming from fat.

And now, the good news! Check out some of the better candy options. (Just remember that even though many of these are low in fat, they still contain things like artificial dyes--and lots of sugar):

* Candy corn: a large handful, approximately 26 pieces, contains 150 calories.
* Jolly Ranchers: three pieces are 70 calories. Plus, they take forever to eat.
* Dum Dums: one serving size is three pops--and only 59 calories.
* Peeps pumpkins: soft, gooey and 130 calories for eight. * York Peppermint Patties: a mini is just 50 calories.

Yep, I see some favorites on both lists (hello, peanut butter cups and candy corn!). But I'm operating on a planned procrastination technique when it comes to the sweet stuff--I'm waiting until October 31 (we're talking mere minutes before miniature ghosts and goblins wander up the walk) before buying it, because I know that there's no way a bag of unopened Halloween candy will stay unopened until Halloween.

What's your favorite Halloween candy? Have you bought a bag yet for trick-or-treaters (or yourself)?
