Health Challenge: Can You Nix the Fat Talk for a Whole Week?

By Lexi Petronis, Glamour magazine

Hi guys! It's Lexi! I'm filling in for the amazing Sarah while she takes an extremely well-deserved vacation this week. There's tons of cool health news I'm super-excited to talk about with you all, but first I've got a challenge for you-and it might be a hard one. I know it is for me.

So here's a question. How often do you find yourself talking about fat? You know: "Do these jeans make my butt look big," "I feel so fat today,"? Hey, you're not alone. Like, you're really, really not alone-"fat talk" is practically standard-issue chitchat for women as we try (consciously or not) to fit a certain type of body image. But "fat talk" has been found to be psychologically damaging, and it may even contribute to the formation of disordered eating. There are 10 million women with eating disorders in the U.S. It's time to take control of the way we view our bodies.

And that's why we're taking part in "Fat Talk Free Week" here on Vitamin G. Sponsored in part by the sorority Delta Delta Delta, the campaign began three years ago to help college women combat negative body image, and this week, women all around the country are on board. For one week, we're going to stop talking about fat-and, in doing so, hopefully change the way we're thinking about fat.

So let's start today, lovelies. And remember that even innocent-sounding fat chat-like, "You look great! Have you lost weight?"-totally counts. We can do this!

Are you up for the challenge? Do you think it'll be hard for you to put a ban on fat talk for an entire week?
