The Health DOs and DON'Ts of Wearing Sunglasses

by Alyssa Clough

You wear sunscreen to protect your skin, right? So it makes sense that you should give the same amount of care and concern to your eyes, especially in the summer months when we spend more time in the sun. This seems intuitive, but only 12 percent of Americans say protecting their eyes is their top priority when purchasing a pair of sunglasses, according to a new report from The Vision Council.

The same study shows that Americans are lying about their sunglass use: While 72 percent of adults reported wearing sunglasses outside, an observational study confirmed that only 60 percent don them. What's more, 77 percent of adults say they wear them when they drive, but in reality, only 52 percent actually do!

The Vision Council shares their DOs and DON'Ts to finding the perfect summer sunnies, and why you need to wear them:

DO wear them in the early morning and in the late afternoon. Think 8 to 10 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. The most damaging rays for your eyes and exposing your unprotected eyes are during these times.

DON'T feel like you have to drop a ton of cash.
Price does not equal protection; there are many affordable brands out there that work just as well, including these sunglasses that start at just $4.

DO make sure to check that they are UVA and UVB protected.
Wearing sunglasses that aren't UVA or UVB protected put your eyes at a higher risk!

DON'T forget them when you're headed to the beach or for a weekend getaway on the lake.
Water reflects 100 percent of rays, meaning a higher risk for your eyes. If you actively avoid water sports (like me) you're not off the hook: dry sand and concrete reflect 25 percent of rays.

DO choose a pair that is comfortable.
Let's be real, our faces come in all shapes and sizes, which means the fit is crucial. If you don't like how your sunglasses feel and look, chances are you won't wear them. Unsure of what shapes work best on you? We've got you covered.
