Healthy Inspiration: 5 Doable Things to Make Your Year Fit, Happy and Healthy

By Sarah Jio, Glamour magazine

Thinking about New Year's resolutions? If you're looking for a few doable ways to be healthier in 2011, look no further. Here's a list of easy things to inspire you to have the healthy, happy and fit year you deserve!

1. Slim down with ... water!
Whether you want to maintain your weight, or maybe lose 10 pounds this year, put good-old H2O to work, say researchers. A recent study found that people who drank two glasses of water before sitting down for a meal took in more calories than those who dove right in. Make it your new eating habit!

2. Buy a healthy cookbook or healthy living book: Your assignment: Head to your local bookstore and hit the healthy living/diet/cooking section. Find a book that resonates with you--whether it's about exercise or vegetarian cooking--and read it in January to pick up some new healthy living tips.

3. Update your fitness wardrobe: I know it's silly, but I have more motivation to run/workout when I actually like my fitness clothes. Nope, don't spend a fortune, but invest in a good pair of sneaks that you love and hit up Old Navy or Target for a few cute workout tops and active bottoms to start your year off right.

4. Start drinking green tea: There seems to be no limit to what this ancient tea can do for your health (from giving you gorgeous skin to helping ward off cancer). Why not make a pot today?

5. Pick up a sort of granola/hippy/New Agey health practice: No, no, no--I am so not sitting cross legged in meditation pose here, nor am I into chanting or colon cleanses, but I do think some of the self-care and health practices that come out of the more "natural" health arenas can do a body good--or at least get you focused on living a more healthful life. Whether it's picking up a new herbal tea at a local health food store, or getting into dry brushing (who knows if it works--it feels good!), sometimes picking up on a (safe) holistic or natural health practice can help you remember to care for yourself in healthy ways. Always a good thing!
