Jillian Michaels on Bite-Sized Abuse: A Get-Slim Lesson for Your Week

"If you need abuse to have an emotional breakthrough, I'll give you abuse."

This was an emotional week at the Biggest Loser Ranch with plenty of tears and touching moments. The stakes were the highest they've been this season because two people were being sent home instead of the usual one.

The unlucky ladies: Sophia, who had the lowest percentage of weight loss and was automatically booted, and Burgandy, who was voted off by her fellow contestants.

The episode opened with a tough temptation challenge that required eating a lot of scrumptious-looking cupcakes in order to find a coupon for a 1-pound advantage at weigh-in, but many contestants chose to sit it out. As Lisa smartly put it: "My strategy is to stay the hell away from cupcakes. Cupcakes got me here!" Good thinking, Lisa!

The biggest breakthrough moment involved sweet and smiley contestant Ada. Despite losing 10 pounds this week--more than any other woman in the house--she couldn't feel proud of herself. Jillian decided Ada needed a little extra "attention" at the gym (Jillian's version of attention: "I'm going to kill you. You're going to cry blood.").

After being pushed to her physical limit, Ada finally broke down and confessed to Jillian that her brother had drowned when she was young, and her parents had always blamed her and told her she was worthless. She was used to being a failure in their eyes. Jillian assured Ada she deserved success (hear, hear!), and deep down she knew it or else she wouldn't be at the ranch.

The takeaway here: Failure can feel comfortable and safe, making it easy to accept self-defeating thoughts like "I physically can't run on that treadmill" or "I'll never lose the weight, so why try?" But you can--even without Jillian Michaels screaming in your face. Recruit family and friends who believe in you to serve as your support system, and most importantly, believe in yourself.
