Katie Couric's Workout Confession: 'I Get Uniboob!'

By Katie Couric

I love that it stays light so long after work in the summer, giving everyone more time to be outside enjoying the all-too-brief season. But as we bust out of doors for some exercise, we're also busting out (or out of) our sports bras. For many of us, that means the "uniboob" is also in season. That's the smooshed boob-shelf hovering in the center of your chest as you jog, bike or walk.Photo:Katie with a workout buddy, Alexis Weatherspoon,byAndrew Rothschild:

The truth is, I'm endowed, and when I'm crammed into a sports bra it's like exercising with a football strapped to my chest. The women I know who are smaller on top complain that they look as flat as a Skipper doll in their sports bras. The grass is always greener on the other chest.

Luckily, a run around the block isn't meant to be a walk down a runway. It's not a fashion show, it's about getting fit. And having learned about mastectomies and spoken to women who have had their breasts removed, I fully understand that size doesn't matter. Health does, and I am very lucky to be a healthy woman with healthy breasts. Exercise plays an important role in keeping them that way.

In fact, a study from last year found that adult women of all ages who get 10 to 19 hours of exercise each week are 30% less likely to develop breast cancer, and the effects are more pronounced among postmenopausal women. Plus, regular exercise is known to increase your heart health, bone strength and maybe even your overall happiness! And now that the weather is right for exercising outdoors, I'm having a lot more fun doing it.

I've always been athletic. I did gymnastics and cheerleading as a girl. Now, it's Spinning, yoga or a good, brisk walk. But I don't think you have to be able to run a marathon, or even a mile, to benefit from exercise. Simple things like taking a walk around the neighborhood, pulling weeds in the yard, going for a hike in the woods or taking a bike ride not only provide a workout, they also provide some colorful scenery-like the sight of all of us squeezed into our sports bras.

We're all in this together, so let's get ready to bust a move this summer! We can start a sisterhood of the sports bra uniboob.
