Know This Ingredient: Calendula

I first heard of calendula at summer camp in Maine when the nurse used to give everyone an ointment made from the calendula flowers (commonly known as marigolds!) instead of some medicated gel for bug bites and poison ivy. (I think it might have been the Weleda Calendula Ointment, but I'm not 100 percent sure.) The stuff was a miracle worker, but I never expected to see it on shelves of super-chic beauty stores. But all of a sudden, calendula is everywhere.

Well, let's back up. The story behind this buzzed-about bud is that it's actually a type of marigold, but more importantly has some all-star skin bennies that work well with any skin type, since it's used across the board for myriad skin issues.

The main reason it's so awesome is because of how gentle calendula is to skin. Not only is the flower extract super soothing, it's also a serious anti-inflammatory that's been used for centuries as a homeopathic fix: A most remarkable healing agent, calendula is great for treating open wounds, parts that will not heal. It also promotes healthy granulations and rapid healing. And, oh yeah, calendula also has major antibacterial, antimicrobial and astringent effects making it a hard hitter for acne-prone skin that will leave skin happy and calm -- not stripped and miserable. (Something we'd all like, right?)

I'm currently beyond obsessed with the brand-new, yet-to-be-released Kiehl's Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash. This stuff knocks out dirt and oil like a champ, but leave skins softer than when you started, whether you're endlessly oily or seriously sensitive.
