Madonna's Workouts Through The Years

Let's face it--these days, Madonna is as much a fitness icon as a musical legend. And now, as we learned yesterday, she's opening a gym! We looked back at our Material Girl-inspired fitness trends over the years.

Madonna was one of the first Hollywood megastars to become a major devotee to pilates. A core-intensive workout, pilates aims to increase the body's strength, flexibility and control. We took the core craze one step further with Nonna Gleyzer, a pilates pro based in (where else?) Los Angeles.

For years, Madonna trained with Tracy Anderson, who now works with Gwyneth Paltrow. The former dancer designed an exclusive arm workout for SELF. "Conventional moves won't deliver the sleek definition that most women want," Anderson told us. "You have to challenge muscles from different angles."

These days, Madonna swears by barre3, a a vigorous workout that combines elements of yoga, pilates, and ballet barre created by trainer Sadie Lincoln. This routine is one of the latest fitness trends to sweep Hollywood--half of the celebs who stop by SELF say they've tried a class!
