Mix it Up This Spring by Joining a Sports Team with Your Partner

Many couples belong to the same gym but go their separate ways as soon as they enter the building. Even if both people enjoy the same type of workouts, they don't always--or even often--choose to break a sweat together. Be that as it may, there is a cool way to spend time with your sweetie while also getting a dose of adrenaline--outside the bedroom, that is!

When it comes to joining an adult sports league, you might be excited about sharing something unique with your partner and adding to your weekly quality time. At least that's how Jessica Chesnutt, a 30-year-old Manhattanite who works in publishing, saw it when she asked her partner of nearly ten years to join her on a Brooklyn kickball team with Zog Sports, the co-ed, social sports organization for young professionals with outposts all over the U.S. Natalie Sauro, 29-year-old nurse practitioner, wasn't initially thrilled, but then Chesnutt convinced her that it was about spending more time together. "I was going to play anyway, so I tried to convince her that she'd rather be with me than waiting for me," said Chesnutt. Sauro finally agreed.

Even if you're not in it for the post-game socials, joining a casual sports team with your partner can be a fun way of mixing it up and moving away from some of the typical activities you find yourselves doing every weekend. And it can bring about a sense of togetherness that going to dinner and a movie can't. Says Chesnutt: "It was fun to feel like we were a unit on the team. We would kick in the lineup after each other and play positions that worked together on purpose because we understood each other and could anticipate each other's next steps better than other teammates."

There were other couples on the teams they played, but Chesnutt and Sauro weren't necessarily getting involved to meet potential double dates. Chances are, however, that you will have fun breaking away from your normal exercise routine, and if you choose a sport that neither of you knows well, you'll probably end up honing a new skill or two.

Plus, gearing up for a game with your partner sets a wonderful example for the kids, especially if they've been reluctant to get involved with team sports.
Why not look into your area's local teams and see if they have a spring session starting soon. You might just get closer to your partner as you discover your inner athlete.
