You've probably already heard that spending money on an experience like a cooking class can make you happier than dropping cash on material things (sunglasses, dresses, etc.). But new research found that the reason why you do it is even more important.

According to a study from San Francisco State University, it's important to spend money because you want to. Spending money on an experience to impress someone else won't make you happy at all.

For the study, scientists surveyed 241 people and found that people who bought experiences like concert tickets or a vacation because they wanted to felt fulfilled and happy. Those who did it because they thought it might impress someone felt more bummed out and less connected to other people afterward.

Of course, if you happen to want to check out a new band and it'll impress your crush in the process, you're all good. Just don't shell out to hear music you're not into in hopes he'll think it's awesome-you'll regret it later.
