Never (Ever!) Be a Victim

As smart twenty-something women, we know the basics when it comes to safety 101. For instance, we always have our cellphones with us, don't walk down dark alleys (enter scary movie music), and even sometimes carry mace with us (clutch allowing). But what happens when danger or an attack happens when you least expect it? Here, we have little-known tips so that you never, ever find yourself a victim.

1. Look out for "traps."

When getting into your car after a day of shopping, do you ever notice those white flyers annoyingly hanging off your windshield? You're probably used to opening your door, getting out of your car and removing the flyer, but WAIT. Attackers have been known to put fake flyers or any pieces of paper on their victim's windshields to distract them for a few seconds - and when their victim gets out to remove it, they'll jump in the car or worse, attack them when they know right where they are. Instead, leave any flyer or paper on your windshield until you drive to a well-lit area, and then safely remove them from your car.

2. The only thing to trust is your GUT.

If Ted Bundy taught us anything (google him if you need a crime refresher), it is that attackers don't always "look" like the creepy cape-wearing guy you'd expect. They could be well-educated, good-looking people who look like the ordinary neighbor or friend. But don't be misled by anyone you come into contact with. Listen to your gut: if something doesn't feel or look right to you, leave the area. Use your common sense, too. Don't ignore your first instinct or the red flag that goes off in your head. Once you sense it, leave the situation ASAP.

3. Always know how much cash is on you.

There have been reports of attackers running after people who just bought something from a store or gas station, and telling them "Miss…you left $20…it fell out of your purse!" and trying to hand them the so-called lost money back. In the time that the person takes to roll down the window, or pause to get the money, the attacker strikes. Yikes! Therefore, always know how much cash is in your purse, in your pocket, etc. That way, if you know you didn't have a $20 bill to begin with, you'll know to ignore the person and drive safely away.

4. If wearing heels, bring a comfy, second set of shoes.

We love us some Dr. Scholl's Fast Flats for major city walking, but they're also great to avoid an attack. Think about it: your huge heels, while cute, are not the easiest to run in. When you know you'll be walking home alone or just with a few friends, always take a minute to put on the comfy flats. And if you do find yourself in a scary situation wearing heels, take them off ASAP. It's better to run barefoot! Plus, the stiletto heel is sometimes as long and sharp as a knife, so use it as a weapon, if needed.

5. Be weary of false car problems.

Women are, ahem, not known for being "car people," but don't let that lead to an attack. You see, some attackers prey on what they think women don't know. Attackers have been known to wave down or beep at the car next to them, alerting them to "pull over immediately" because something is wrong with their car. The victim thinks the nice person in the car next to them is helping them out, so they pull over…and BAM, an attack strikes. It's fine for a stranger to alert you about something wrong with your car, but don't pull over or even get out of your car if you do pull over. Wait until you're in a well-lit area, call the police for help, and keep your car doors locked if you think you actually DO have a car problem.

6. Pay attention.

You've heard it before, and you'll hear it again. Look around while you walk, keep your purse safely attached to your body, and if you're walking home by yourself, have your cell phone nearby but don't be talking on it as it will distract you. Hold your car keys in your hands, so that you always have a weapon in case something happens. Think ahead, always. Have a plan wherever you are if an attack happens. Be safe and you won't be sorry!
