New Quick-Read Food Nutrition Labels Coming Soon

By Sarah Jio, Glamour magazine

Coming soon: New, big-font, easy-read nutrition labels on the front of your favorite food products. A good idea, right? Maybe, but some people are concerned...

Many of your favorite food products will soon be getting nutrition-label makeovers. Instead of flipping the package over and reading the fine print, you'll very soon be able to just look right on the front of the package and read the stats: sugar, protein, fat, fiber--the essentials.

But, not all people are thrilled. Food writer Marion Nestle, for one, reportedly believes the new system is flawed. Others say that the quick-read nutrition labels are too brief, and will prevent people from reading ingredient labels where things like artificial ingredients and trans-fat lade hydrogenated oils lurk (remember, a product can still say "0 grams trans fat" if there is less than .5 grams of trans fat per serving--a tricky labeling loophole that means you could be eating several tablespoons worth of belly-fat generating trans fat without knowing it.

So, I have to say, while any more info about nutrition is good, be sure you're getting the full story.

What do you think? Will these new nutrition labels help you eat healthier?

P.S. Going out to eat? A stay-svelte reminder. And, the herb that makes you ... smarter?
