What People Think when Fergie Puts on a Few Pounds

by Lexi Petronis, Glamour

Fergie told Rachael Ray that when she puts on a few pounds, it gets everybody talking--because they make a big assumption about why.

While a guest on The Rachael Ray Show, Fergie said: "[People ask if I'm pregnant] every time I fluctuate a few pounds. Like right now, I'm a couple pounds up. Sometimes I go a couple pounds down and I wear the clothes that are more fitted, but people kind of look at me because they're expecting [that] it's that time. We do hope for children and that will be coming up, but it's not yet."

Yep, when Fergie's, um, lady lumps get a little more noticeable, people assume that she and Josh Duhamel are expecting a baby Pea.

OK, I'm sure newly-married celebs probably fall victim to this ridiculous "pregnant or fat?" game more often than most of us might, but don't you know a woman or two that's dealt with the "is she or isn't she" speculation, too, based purely on how she looks? It drives me batty. Like the fluctuations in the shape or weight of women's bodies are anyone's business--or the contents of their uteruses are, either.

And why don't dudes get any of this scrutiny? "Oh my, George has put on weight since the wedding! He must be storing up sperm to impregnate Sara!" (I know, I know, that doesn't even make sense--it's also a very gross and confusing visual. But c'mon.)

The guessing isn't always mean-spirited, of course--there's a "first comes loves, then comes marriage, then comes so-and-so with a baby carriage" expectation that often happens whenever a couple gets, you know, coupled up. Pregnancy spectators seem to like order. And Fergie seems like she deals with the question very gracefully, which I think is lovely. I'm just not sure I would be able to do the same.

OK, am I overreacting? Is it all right to ask someone who's gained a little weight if she's pregnant, or is the topic completely off the table?
