President Obama Declares Support for Planned Parenthood

In the first instance of a sitting president addressing an abortion rights group, President Obama directly addressed Planned Parenthood and assured them that he would fight to prevent the threatened regression of reproductive rights, according to USA Today. (Granted, he never used the word "abortion" at any point - he did say "the right to choose!" - but still.)

Incidentally, this comes very shortly after meeting with the 20 female Senators over dinner.

Said President Obama, whose second term was largely backed by young female voters: "When it comes to a woman's health, no politician should get to decide what's best for you. The only person who should get to make decisions about your health is you... Planned Parenthood is not going anywhere. It's not going anywhere today, it's not going anywhere tomorrow."

He says that he plans to do everything he can to stop Republican lobbyists to cut more federal funding from the institution, which, despite the severe new anti-choice restrictions in Arkansas and North Dakota, remains a primary source of healthcare for many women.

"The fact is, after decades of progress, there's still those who want to turn back the clock to policies more suited to the 1950s than the 21st Century. And they've been involved in an orchestrated and historic effort to roll back basic rights when it comes to women's health."

But, he concluded: "You've also got a president who is going to be right there with you, fighting every step of the way."
