Simon Doonan's "Gay Men Don't Get Fat" Prescribes Gay Foods, Kardashian Marathons, and Laughter

Although the title of Simon Doonan's newest book takes a jab at Mireille Guiliano's French Women Don't Get Fat, you won't find serious weight loss between the bright pink covers of Gay Men Don't Get Fat. The book's true message is less about maintaining a trim figure and more about balking social expectations in the name of being fabulous, no matter your body type. Far from being a judgmental dictator of taste, Doonan is a proponent of daring, over-the-top fashion choices. "I don't want people to look sensible. I want them to be fun and crazy and try new things," he told us while wearing a floral patterned shirt at his book launch at Barney's on January 5.

Gay Men Don't Get Fat is at the heart of a humorous collection of lessons gleaned from Simon's fashionable life, pearls he offers up to the straight women of the world. Some feathers may ruffle at the proliferation of stereotypes, but he emphasizes that he uses them as a means of neutralizing them, and to have some fun while you're at it. "I think stereotypes are fun to goof around with, and in a way you sort of diffuse them if you throw them around."

"There are a few things underpinning it that are very true," said Doonan in our interview, fittingly held over a breakfast of berries and yogurt at Barney's. "I do think that it's a very complex time to be a girl. The expectations of girls are extraordinary…You have to be like Giselle and Sumner Redstone wrapped into one, and then you have to be like the old woman who lived in a shoe and popping out children."

It would be remiss to imply that Doonan doesn't offer up any advice on how to eat, as he recommends a balanced diet of "gay" and "straight" foods. He also says the best appetite suppressant he's found is a Kardashian marathon. And did you know that there are two foods that can be classified as "the most gay foods"? Well, there are, and Simon explains those, as well as these other classic one-liners in this hilarious video of our interview.

When it comes to exercise, Doonan says he stays very active. "I've alway been sporty spice," he says, and has included a chapter in his book about what to do if your boyfriend has man boobs. He confesses that he loved the aerobics craze of the '80s, "with pink leg warmers and everything." It's clear that the best calorie-burning activity endorsed by Gay Men Don't Get Fat is laughter.
